The Editors’ Blog

Help us choose next month’s cover!

We’re in the middle of designing July’s magazine, which focuses on the Arctic. It looks at the often-ignored human face of the dramatic changes currently rocking the top of the world, and tells the stories of some extraordinary indigenous people, as well as the fascinating history of this mythical region. Lots of stunning pictures too. And me in a woolly hat.

We currently have two contenders for the cover, and want you to help us choose which one to go with. Usually, the cover is decided upon by the editor and designer of that issue, along with Amanda from marketing and whoever else is unlucky enough to be passing at the time. But this month we want to cast our net much wider - to, well, the net.

So here are the two frontrunners. What do you think? Which would you be most likely to pick up if you saw it in a shop? Which would have you tearing open the envelope if it plopped through your letter box? What can we do to improve them?

Please post your comments or quickly submit a vote below - there’s no prize, but I’m sure Santa Claus will reward you (if he’s still got a home by next Christmas.)

Number 1: On thin ice

Number 2: Some like it cold

I prefer No 2. Striking image and cover lines - but perhaps that's just because 'Some Like It Hot' is one of my favourite films.

I found it a hard call to make. I think I prefer the image on "On Thin Ice"(#1). Its more dramatic and full of movement. But the image from "Some Like It Cold" (#2) was darkly humorous which also appeals to me.

Didn't even see the "On thin ice" coverline on first glance; whereas "Some like it cold" stood out and caught my attention (better position, more contrast).

Also prefer the overall contrast in Number 2 better. The warm/cool thing is more eye catching to me.

Three cents,

Phillip.

I like the irony in no 2

Besides nearly naked bodies will win on the newsstand every time.

I liked the first cover best at first, but then think that the second does have flesh appeal which seems to be so important these days on news-stands. However news-stands are not our main selling area. But is cover No 2 relevant to the mag content inside...? Does that matter...?

Still, both covers are good and so are both the headlines. Could put some icicles around 'some like it cold' perhaps.
So, come on, which cover do I really prefer...
probably No 2.

Tough one. I like the slogan in the first cover but I think that the second one summs the problem in a more concise and visual way than the first one. Combination of the two?

Thnaks for spreading out your pool of advisors, that's brilliant in itself...On the other hand I cast my vote for "Some like it cold" mainly because commercially would be more appealing at first sight, regardless of the plight that the Arctic peoples are ACTUALLY undergoing

IMHO "on thin ice" is much more punchy for the headline. "Some like it cold" is a smart title, but would be a better keynote heading rather than magazine cover.

Voted for 2 but would be interested in 1 without
"on thin ice" which i think detracts from the image and doesn't say much
